New Westminster Heritage and History

Please note that during Phase Three of our renovation, scheduled from Aug 28 to the spring/summer of 2019 (while the first floor is closed), several historical resources are unavailable:

  • Our microfilm collection and a microfilm scanner have been temporarily relocated to the New Westminster Museum and can be accessed Monday to Sunday: 10 am – 5 pm, Thursday open late to 8 pm.
  • Our City Directories will be unavailable, however the British Columbia City Directories 1860-1955 can be accessed online at
  • Access to our historical photos will be limited to the online database, thus we are not able to process any requests for scanning.
  • Access to our fire insurance maps and historical maps will be unavailable while the second floor is closed.

If you are researching genealogy, we’re very sorry for this inconvenience. During the renovation we will continue to have access to: Ancestry – access from our main or branch locations.

The New Westminster Public Library's Heritage and Local History site is a rich resource that includes historical photographs, New Westminster historical organizations, genealogical resources and more. From May Queens to a history of New Westminster Street names, there's certainly something to pique your interest about the Royal City:
