On a dark blue background, a red banner reads 'Seedy Saturday' above some illustrated plants in pots, garden tools, a bag of soil and a red watering can.

Seedy Saturday

Calling all gardeners!

Indoor, outdoor, container, backyard – wherever you grow things, whatever your level of expertise, you’ll find something of interest at the New Westminster Seedy Saturday!

Join us for a morning of garden-focused activities:

  • Let kids get their hands in the dirt and Plant Some Seeds with Gardens4Kids
  • Stock up on seeds from our seed cabinet or check out the Seed Swap Tables (bring seeds you’d like to share with others!)
  • Bring your burning garden questions to the Ask a Gardener Booth
  • Get some pots to plant your seedlings in or clean out a garden shed and donate to the Garden Tool Swap
  • Learn about local gardening organizations at our information tables
  • Connect with other New West garden enthusiasts

Big thank you to our special partners: FarmFolk CityFolk, Gardens4Kids, BC Eco Seed Coop

The event will be in various locations at the Main Branch. Seeds are available at the seed cabinet on the main floor, kids’ activities in the kids’ area, Ask a Gardener will be upstairs in the iConnect Lab, and seed and tool swap in the Ash Street Room (also upstairs).

  • I have seeds to share. What do I do?

Just bring your seeds on the day of the event and add them to the tables in the Ash Street Room! Seeds should be in good condition and ready to grow. If you have open pollinated or heirloom seeds you'd like to contribute to the seed library (we will evaluate and repackage to make available in our seed cabinet), you can drop them off any time at any of our service desks. Please include information about the plants and your name and contact information.

  • What is this garden tool swap?

Maybe you have loads of pots piling up in your garage which people could use to start seedlings. Or maybe you cleaned out your parent's garden shed when they moved out of their house, and have extra shovels, or rakes or hand tools. Or maybe you need something to get started in your own garden. Bring any items you wish to share to the event on Feb 24, and take them to the Ash Street Room. Please make sure they are relatively clean. If you need supplies, come and have a look at what's available - maybe you'll find the perfect thing!

  • How can my kids get involved?

Just head on over to the kids' department and our enthusiastic volunteers from Gardens4Kids will help your little ones plant a seed or two to take home and nurture. Watching a plant grow from seed is an amazing way for kids to understand where our food comes from, and how plants transform sunlight, water and soil into tasty treats that fuel our bodies!

  • Who is the gardener at the Ask a Gardener booth?

We have some amazingly knowledgeable gardeners from the New Westminster Horticultural Society who will share their wisdom - bring your questions about your growing situation and they'll do their best to give you great advice.
