Kids Summer Reading Club

Kids Summer Reading Club is a fun, self-paced program that encourages children to keep reading while school is out. It’s free, and all children are welcome to participate.

Summer Reading Club runs from June 16th to September 14th.

How does it work?

1

Visit one of our library branches in person to receive your free Reading Log.

2

Set a reading goal

We recommend 15 minutes a day as a good place to start!

3

Track your reading

Colour in your Reading Log every day that you reach your reading goal.

4

Earn prizes

For every 7 days of reading, you earn a sticker.

ULTIMATE CHALLENGE: Complete the entire Reading Log — that is, read all 49 days — and you’ll earn a Summer Reading Club medal!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Can I listen to audiobooks or read in another language?

Yes! Reading in all languages and formats counts for Summer Reading Club and is encouraged.

If I can’t come to the library can I still participate?

If you can’t make it to the library this summer, you can participate online through the BC Summer Reading Club!

Is there an age restriction?

Kids Summer Reading Club is aimed at children from Pre-K to Grade 5. There is no minimum age to participate. Kids in Grade 6 and up are encouraged to join our Teen Summer Reading Club.

Do I need to live in New West? Do I need a library card?

Everyone is welcome to join Summer Reading Club. You don’t need to live in New West or have a library card.

How do I get my reading medal?

Ooh, we love the confidence! Bring your completed Reading Log to one of our library branches to receive your medal. Medals will be available from August 5th until September 14th.

I lost my Reading Log!

No problem! Come to the library to get a new Reading Log. Fill in the days you have already read — you don’t have to start over.

Are there other activities in addition to reading?

Yes! Visit our Events Calendar or pick up our summer program brochure. There are also lots of fun online activities over at the BC Summer Reading Club.

Reading Ideas for Kids

Remember, you can read anything and it counts towards Summer Reading Club. But, just in case all that choice proves overwhelming, here are some books you can consider reading to get started!
