  • What is available at NWPL?
    Two ebook providers are currently available to NWPL card holders who live in New Westminster: Freading and OverDrive (Library2go).
     
    What are the differences between the two services?
    Freading: users can download max. 3 titles per week (they roll over for 4 weeks). Lending period is 2 weeks. No holds, simultaneous access.
    OverDrive (Library2go): users can access both the BC Coop collection and the Advantage collection and can download max. 5 titles at one time. Holds can be places on titles currently unavailable.
     
    What is the Advantage Collection?
    Titles purchased exclusively for NWPL users. The hold lists are much shorter. Users must log on with their NWPL card number to see these titles in the catalogue. They are marked with an orange logo and letter "a" (see logo below).

    What do users need to be able to download ebooks from the library?
    • A valid NWPL card
    • Must live in New Westminster
     
    Note: The Library computers cannot be used to download ebooks.
     
    Is there any option for users who are not familiar with ebooks to try out this format?
    The library has Kobo ereaders preloaded with ebooks that users can borrow. They are searchable in the library catalogue (keyword: Kobo).

  • What You Need:
    • A computer with Internet connection
    • A NWPL library card
    • Free Software (Adobe Digital Editions - ADE) downloaded to your computer; you can also read eBooks online using the OverDrive Read feature of Library2go in which case you don’t need ADE. If you need help downloading ADE, please look at this information page from OverDrive.
    • Adobe ID
      Note: you will need to authorize your computer(s) and ereader(s) that you intend to use with library ebooks with the same Adobe ID
    • An email account (required when registering for an Adobe ID and when placing holds)
    Downloading eBooks on an eReader is a 3-step process:
    1. Search for and borrow eBook from Library2go using your NWPL card
    2. Download the ebooks you've checked out to your computer using Adobe Digital Editions (ADE)
    3. Read the ebook on your computer using the OverDrive Read feature or transfer it to your ereader using ADE. Follow these instructions to transfer an ebook to an ereader

    Returning an ebook early:

    You will need to use your computer and ADE to return ebooks before their expiry date even if you transferred them onto your ereader:
    1. Open Adobe Digital Editions (ADE)
    2. Right click the eBook you would like to return
    3. Click Return Borrowed Item.

    Useful to know

    • You can borrow 5 items at a time (eAudio and eBooks combined)
    • You can choose a 7, 14 or 21-day loan period but also return ebooks early if you wish to
    • ebooks will automatically be returned. There are no overdue charges
    • You can renew them, if there are no holds. A Renew button will show in your Library2Go account 3 days before the due date
    • You must check out holds within exactly 72 hours of notification or choose Auto checkout.

  • A. Downloading ebooks from Freading to eReaders

    1. Go to the Freading log in screen and log on with your NWPL card number: https://nwpl.freading.com/users/sdlogin
    2. You can borrow max. 3 titles per week (they roll over to the following 4 week and expire after that)
    3. To transfer the titles onto eReaders you must use ADE (the process is identical with transferring ebooks from OverDrive onto ereaders)
    Tips:
    • Make sure you have an account with Adobe Digital Editions
    • If you do not have one, you may create by going to "Get an Adobe ID" at: www.adobe.com/accoun/sign-in.adobedotcom.htm
    • Computer users & eReader users: launch application before downloading eBooks
    • To download ADE, you can visit the Adobe Product Page at: http://www.adobe.com/go/digital-editions-2.0-dlpage
    • Direct link to the Windows installer .exe -http://www.adobe.com/go/digital-editions-2.0-dl-win
    • Direct link to the Macintosh installer .dmg -http://www.adobe.com/go/digital-editions-2.0-dl-mac
    • Computer & eReader users "open" rather than "save" the file when downloading eBooks
    • Opening will automatically save eBook in your Adobe library
    • To transfer the file, plug in your eReader. The eReader will show up in your Adobe software, then you drag the downloaded eBook onto the name of the eReader.
    • iOS and Android users can download books from within the Freading app.
    • Compatible ereaders: Nook Devices, Sony Reader, Kobo Reader

     

    B. Downloading ebooks from Freading to Tablets
    Download the Freading app for iOS (Apple) or Android tablets
    Please note: You will be prompted for your established Adobe Credentials (see above).

     

    How do the Apps work?

    Apple: The Apps functionality is to store, read, and get books.   

    1. Login. You are now connected to your library's Freading site and can get books.
    2. Download a book.  You may be asked to “authorize” your device, which means you must login using your Adobe credentials when prompted.
    3. After downloading, you will be able to read and navigate the book in the Freading app.

    Android: You can use the App to download and read a book.

  • How do I create a OneClickdigital account?

    Users must create the account with their NWPL card using the OneClickdigital link available on NWPL website. Check out this tutorial for more help with creating an account.

    How do I listen to eAudiobooks?
    There are two options to listen to eaudiobooks:

    • through a web browser (streaming); requirements: wifi connection and a device with internet capabilities. 
    • by downloading eaudiobooks:
    1. ​using the OneClickdigital app (available for Android and iOS). Check out this tutorial for help with intalling the app.
    2. using the OneClickdigital Media Manager (for Windows or iOS) to transfer your borrowed eaudiobooks to an MP3 player (or other device). For help installing the Media Manager see this tutorial and for help using the Media Manager see this tutorial.

     

  • Q: Will my device work with OverDrive?
    A: The best place to start is the Device profiles on OverDrive Help, where you can find information on the most popular devices and platforms and learn how they can be used with digital titles from OverDrive. Each profile will recommend software or apps, compatible formats, steps on getting started, and more.

    Q: How do I return digital titles early (i.e. before the expiry date)?
    A: Go to OverDrive Help and read the article about returning titles before the lending period expires. From there, you’ll find links to steps for returning titles from specific devices or software.

    Q: What to do if the OverDrive app is not working
    A: You can find basic step-by-step instructions to troubleshoot the OverDrive app on mobile devices in the help article. These are good first steps to give users, especially if you don’t have detailed information about the issue.

    Q: What to do if you get a "content locked" error on your Kobo eReader?
    A: This issue sometimes occurs when you're trying to transfer an eBook to your Kobo eReader. Before you try anything below, make sure you're using Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) to transfer eBooks to your Kobo. If you've been trying to use the Kobo desktop software, that could be what's causing the issue. See this article for step-by-step instructions.

    Q: What does the error "an eBook has been downloaded or fulfilled by another user or account" mean?
